Welcome!

I am a writer, and I like to write best for children.  Perhaps I never grew up.

My curiosity led me into the world of science.  I will always be a scientist, questioning how things work and delighting in the answers.  Now, I enjoy learning and sharing what I know with kids and writing the stories that have been brewing in my head for years.

I live in Redmond, WA. with my husband, two children, two cats, one dog, and an assortment of insects.  Sometimes, they appear in my stories.

Find out more about me, my stories and books.  I also keep a blog where I ruminate about reading, writing and life.  Feel free to contact me.  I enjoy doing writing and science workshops with children and adults.  I also teach at the Institute of Children's Literature.

Kids, I have a special page just for you.

Thank you for visiting my website.  Check back often for news and stories.                                                       Vijaya

News

I recently added two pages for writers -- these are handouts for my talks -- one on magazine writing and the other on writing-for-hire. I hope you find them useful.

Molly Blaisdell, Allyson Schrier and I will speak about writing Work-for-Hire at the Western WA SCBWI April 2009 meeting. Come join us. Learn to write for your supper!

My magazine writing is tapering as I focus on my YA historical novel. So I'm doubly pleased to share two short articles in the following magazines: Rubber to the Rescue in the Sept. 2008 issue of Know: The Science Magazine for Curious Kids and Gilli Danda in the July 2008 issue of Fun for Kidz.  Check them out.

My Mother's Eggplant, an essay I wrote for This I Believe, is online.

How Do Toys Work? published by Macmillan-McGraw/Hill and Time for Kids is finally here!  I had great fun playing with our toys and  writing this book.

Dreams, Poetry on Buses 2007 BookFirst Grade Friends is one of 55 poems (out of nearly 3,000) selected to be displayed as public art on King County Metro buses.  See the placard here.  Ride the bus, folks!
